SEND Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessment process and coronavirus closures

Your child’s statutory EHC assessment

During these unprecedented times when coronavirus is impacting on our public and private lives, we want to assure you that we are committed to ensuring that Croydon’s Education, Health and Care needs assessment processes remain effective and deliver within the expected timeframe.

The restrictions and guidance put in place by central government, including school closures, clearly present a challenge to this as opportunities for access and assessments are restricted. In order to address this we have introduced a range of measures including use of technology, telephone and virtual meetings as well as accepting the most recent information and reports available to inform the decision making process.

New assessment requests

For new assessment requests the information submitted will be considered within the 6 week timeframe and outcomes communicated with parents/carers in a timely manner.

EHC assessments in progress

For those children and young people whose EHC assessments are currently underway we are committed to ensuring the process is completed within the 20 week timeframe and that EHC Plans are issued in a timely manner.

Delays to information and report requests

Croydon’s SEN Service will continue to request reports from parents/carers and professionals involved in the child/young person’s care, however we recognise there may be a delay in receiving these. Should this be the case and advice is delayed the issuing of EHC Plans will be addressed with the information available. Once any new advice is received the SEN Service will amend the EHC plans as required.

Access to EHC assessments

Our aim is to ensure that the current challenges will not inhibit or prevent any child requiring SEN EHC assessment from accessing this in accordance with the statutory process.

We hope you find this information helpful.
